What is the difference between cultured pearls, fresh water pearls and natural pearls? Salt water pearls with human help are called cultured pearls and salt water pearls produced naturally in Mollusk are called natural pearls. Japan is famous for cultured pearls because the ocean temperature is suitable for mollusk to make pearls. Many countries make pearls, leading among them are China and Japan. Among the types of pearls are: 1. Salt water pearls, also known as cultured pearls or Akoya pearls 2. Tahitian pearls (black) 3. South sea pearls (white or cream) 4. Pearls prices vary from $2 to a few thousand per strand or string, depending on type, size, shape, luster, nacre and perfection. Necklace prices usually include hook or clasp and labor.
